Facebook new page design

Facebook answers questions about new page design

Shortly after Facebook started showing its new design for pages, many marketers and page admins were curious about it — especially the location of tabs and apps.

In a blog post Monday, Facebook answered some of the questions it has been receiving about the new design.

Facebook cleared up the confusion about the left side of the page:

It will vary from business to business. If you’re a business with a brick-and-mortar location, the left-side column will show a map, phone number, hours of business, likes and visits, information about your business, apps (if relevant), photos, videos, reviews, posts to your Page and the Pages your Page likes.

For businesses that operate primarily online, the left-side column will show: likes, information about your business, apps (if relevant), photos, videos, posts to Page and the Pages your Page likes.
Admins will also soon be able to rearrange the order in which these sections appear in the left-side column.
The company also more clearly explained the Pages to Watch feature:

Admins receive a notification whenever their Page is added to another Page’s watch list. The notification indicates that their Page has been added to a list, but does not disclose the name of the Page that added them.

Facebook officially launches ‘Trending’

Facebook has been testing a trending feature similar to Twitter’s trending topics, but the social network announced Thursday that it will start rolling it out for users in the U.S., U.K., Canada, India and Australia.

This may not be available immediately and is a roll-out.On the top right corner of News Feed, Facebook will show trending topics based on popular conversations happening around the social network. Users can then click the topic to see public and friends’ posts about that topic.

A Facebook spokesperson noted that trends are identified by “an algorithm that highlights topics that have had a sharp increase in popularity, as opposed to overall volume.” Trends cannot be sponsored at this time, but this could be a source of revenue for Facebook in the future, much like how brands pay to promote topics on Twitter.

Users can click “see more” for a full list of trends buzzing on Facebook. The site also includes something that Twitter doesn’t: a description of why that particular term is trending.

Facebook allows to custom gender

Facebook allows users to enter a custom gender

Facebook announced Thursday that it will allow its users to customize their gender on their timeline. Previously, the only options available were female and male, but now there’s a custom option for users to identify as their preferred pronoun.

Currently, this is only available to users who view Facebook in U.S. English, but the site hopes to expand this internationally.

Facebook announced this in a post on the Facebook Diversity page:

When you come to Facebook to connect with the people, causes, and organizations you care about, we want you to feel comfortable being your true, authentic self. An important part of this is the expression of gender, especially when it extends beyond the definitions of just “male” or female.” So today, we’re proud to offer a new custom gender option to help you better express your own identity on Facebook.

We collaborated with our Network of Support, a group of leading LGBT advocacy organizations, to offer an extensive list of gender identities that many people use to describe themselves. Moreover, people who select a custom gender will now have the ability to choose the pronoun they’d like to be referred to publicly — male (he/his), female (she/her) or neutral (they/their).

We also have added the ability for people to control the audience with whom they want to share their custom gender. We recognize that some people face challenges sharing their true gender identity with others, and this setting gives people the ability to express themselves in an authentic way.

To change your gender to a custom option, go to your timeline and edit the basic information on the “about” section. For U.S. English users, there will be an option for custom. For further assistance, consult the Help Center guide.

Facebook changes ‘Following’ on News Feed menu to ‘Pages and Public Figures

Facebook has apparently made a small change to the News Feed menu.

Where it used to say “Following,” allowing users to access a feed of pages they’ve liked and celebrities/public figures/prominent users they’re following, it now says “Pages and Public Figures.”This would make it a little easier for users to understand just what’s in that tab, and would allow users to see a stream of posts from the pages they’ve followed, by passing the controversial News Feed algorithm.

Facebook prompts users to add close friends

Facebook utilized the space above News Feed for some users to remind them to utilize the close friends feature. Through this, a designated group of close friends’ updates will be more likely to show up in News Feed.

The prompt, which states, “Don’t Miss the Good Stuff,” can be closed and is completely optional. Within the redesigned News Feed, Facebook also gives the option for a close friends feed, showing all posts from those the user has designated as such. Facebook has had the close friends feature since 2011, but is apparently trying to remind users that it’s still around. The site occasionally prompts users to participate in this feature.

Facebook improves post scheduling

Facebook improves post scheduling, notifies page owners of scheduled posts

Facebook has apparently improved the process by which a page owner schedules a post, as first noticed by Jon Loomer. Previously, to schedule a post from a Facebook page, the admin had to drop down to select day, month, hour and minute. Now, page owners can just select date on a calendar and a time — much like booking a flight.

Loomer loves this change, as it makes the act of scheduling a post much simpler, but he did offer one warning:

While it appears that you can pick any time you want (like 8:43 instead of having to go with the options Facebook provides), that seems to create some problems. I did this and Facebook automatically defaulted to a different time that wasn’t even close. So hopefully that will be cleaned up.

Facebook also lets page admins know that they have a post scheduled, in case they forget.

Facebook’s chat sidebar tells whether friends are active online or mobile

Many Facebook users noticed that the chat sidebar now has active icons for web and mobile, as well as the mobile icon. This was a change by Facebook showing whether or not the user is actively on their phone or web — similar to the newest version of Facebook Messenger.

If there’s just the mobile icon, the message will go to their phone and they will see it when they engage with their phone again.

A Facebook spokesperson described the new feature:

This feature gives you a better understanding of where your friend will receive your message

Facebook revamps post scheduling, adds drag-and-drop photos to pages

Facebook has also given page owners the ability to drag-and-drop photos when they upload, much like the capability available for users. These changes are improvements upon current features and will make it easier for page admins to perform tasks quicker. Facebook notes that it has simplified the page post scheduling process from 12 steps to 4.

Facebook also added a camera icon to the page status update box, so page admins can quickly take a photo to share with fans.

Update: A Facebook spokesperson responded, saying that it is a test that was rolled out to all users.

It looks like Facebook is trying to keep the desktop experience consistent with it’s mobile Messenger, which recently went through an aesthetic improvement.
